King Tuff ~ Morgan Nagler

AGE RESTRICTION: Only Ages 21+ can purchase tickets for this show. NO REFUNDS/EXCHANGES for anyone underage who purchases or attempts to use these tickets. Doors: 7:00 PM Show: 7:30 PM King Tuff I got my Tascam 388 fixed, the same tape machine I had used to record my first album, King Tuff Was Dead. It had been sitting in my parent’s house in Vermont for the past 14 years, but I had finally dragged it out to LA. The first song I recorded on it was “Twisted On A Train”, and I was shocked by how instantly I sounded, and felt, like myself again. In fact, I wrote and recorded the whole dang song in the span of a few hours, which was basically the opposite of how I had been working in the computer. Spending hours moving waveforms around like a zombie, comping vocals, second guessing, trying to make things sound not lifeless, trying to make anything sound good at all, took months. But here on the tape it was so much more alive. More like painting or collaging. More like making actual music. Every move I made stuck like super glue. It was effortless. It was pure joy.  I stopped caring if there were mistakes.   There’s not enough mistakes.   I played my old, blue, Gibson SG, Jazijoo, and she spewed mangled electrified gold.    For once, I sang and I didn’t hate my voice.   I played the drums badly and bounced them in mono to one track and it sounded like glorious shit.   I wish it sounded even worse.   Rock & Roll is the music of rodents and bugs. It should sound like it crept from a decrepit trashcan or a crypt or a toilet. It is not chill or vibey, autotuned or on the grid. It is not perfect, which is why it’s perfect. And I don’t care if it’s dead or alive, cool or uncool: when I hear it, and when I play it, as a chubby and balding 43 year old punk weirdo, I FEEL ENERGIZED.    Morgan Nagler

The Bret Tobias Set ~ The No Good Crowd ~ Bitter Bitter Weeks

AGE RESTRICTION: Only Ages 21+ can purchase tickets for this show. NO REFUNDS/EXCHANGES for anyone underage who purchases or attempts to use these tickets. Doors: 7:00 PM Show: 7:30 PM The Bret Tobias Set @thebretset https://thebrettobiasset.bandcamp.com/ The Set is heartily celebrating the release of a new EP, Tuneless Blues (release date: 2/13/26). It features five sonically disparate tracks telling tales of crises big and small, personal and national. Bret cut his teeth co-fronting the Bigger Lovers, a Philly guitar pop group that swung for the fences in the aughts. The Lovers got four stars from David Fricke in Rolling Stone, opened for Wilco, got panned in Pitchfork, recorded a World Cafe session and built a respectable fanbase one bespectacled dude at a time. Bret re-emerged in 2023 with a set of sharply observed and somewhat dyspeptic contenders via the Pleaser EP. The Butter Valley Malcontent EP followed a year later.  The No Good Crowd You know those nights when everything clicks—the pints are flowing, the band sounds like an old friend, and the songs flash that sly grin you didn’t know you needed. That’s The No Good Crowd.Yes, it’s four dudes making raucous indie rock in the age of bedroom pop, chillwave, shoegaze, and whatever else is trending this week. We know. Still, from the very first shows, a genre-blurring mix of garage rock, power pop, jangle, punk, and a little Americana muscle memory showed up—and refused to leave.Guitarists Jamie Olson and Jim McGuinn have been making noise together since their early-2000s Philly days in Cordalene, then took the scenic route through breakups, side projects, roots bands, punk bands, bluegrass detours, and a decade-long Minnesota exile before circling back home. Add longtime collaborators and trusted rhythm-section troublemakers Brendan Skwire and Neil Simpkins, and—eventually, inevitably—The No Good Crowd happened. Bitter Bitter Weeks Bitter bitter weeks is the music project of record producers / Miner Street Recordings studio owners, Brian McTear and Amy Morrissey (Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile). McTear launched Bitter bitter weeks as a solo project in 2001 with a widely praised Self-titled LP on Princeton’s My Pal God Records. It landed reviews in Pitchfork, Alternative Press, Magnet and a cover feature on The Philadelphia CityPaper. In 2004, McTear produced a second LP Revenge with his new studio partner Amy Morrisse. The album’s title track would be added to Kim Gordon’s and Thurston Moore’s Protest Records compilation alongside Cat Power, Sonic Youth and the poet Allen Ginsberg. In 2007 the group released its third full-length, Peace is Burning Like a River with The A-sides’ Mike Flemming on bass and drummer Ric Menck of The Velvet Crush and Matthew Sweet.   McTear’s unique voice is often said to be Bitter bitter weeks’ most distinguishing feature, with arresting songs about loss, heartbreak, and protest. Stylistically, the project calls to mind early REM and Sebadoh, while McTear admits that he’s long welcomed the influence of music he and Morrissey have produced for other bands – artists like Eltro, The Bigger Lovers, Mazarin, Matt Pond PA, and Los Halos.

Doors: 7:00 PM Show: 7:30 PM Donuts In 2018, Philadelphia pub rock stalwarts, the Donuts, performed Rockpile’s legendary Seconds of Pleasure lp in its entirety at Kung Fu.  Why?  We can’t remember.  However, the Donuts have taken things one step beyond.  They return to Kung Fu to celebrate the release of their latest record, The Pleasure of Seconds.  Yes, the boys took it upon themselves to write answer songs to Rockpile’s originals.  Seconds, as it were.  Rockpile affectionately sang “Teacher Teacher”; the Donuts celebrate a sexy “Substitute Teacher.”  Rockpile’s “When I Write the Book” is answered with “Every Book I Never Read.”  You get the point.  None of this would matter if the Donuts – called “a band to watch” in Playgirl magazine – didn’t coat their pub rock replies in the usual power pop confection for which they have long been celebrated.  Come join ‘the nuts for this much anticipated record release party!   Foxycontin Foxycontin, an American band based in Philadelphia, are four men devoted toplaying high-spirited, pop punk. Formed in 2003, the band features membersof Philly punk legends The Electric Love Muffin and Krhissy. Over thecourse of their career, they have endeared themselves to the Philadelphiamusic scene for their high energy live performances, crisp well-structuredsongs, and tight execution.
