In 2022, a loose pact was made: start something new, don’t overthink it, andwrite catchy songs that feel relatable and genuine.Based in the mountain town of Squamish, British Columbia, Surf Hat have been crafting theirown version of cold-water surf rock—beach music written somewhere between the ocean andthe mountains. Their sound floats somewhere between breezy shimmer of Allah-Las, the looseswagger of The Growlers, and the off-kilter quirkiness of Talking Heads.The band has quickly built momentum the old-fashioned way: writing constantly and taking theirmusic on the road. Influenced by Indigo De Souza and Diet Cig, fun city fan club combines the sounds of pop, alt rock, and grunge with confidence. Precious Little Life Precious Little Life reads like an emo band – named after the first installment of Brian Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series, a catalogue boasting a number of references to Nintendo games, bitcrushed screams, and twinkly riffs, one could be forgiven for classifying them as such. Precious Little Life, however, extends far beyond the borders of the genre, diving deep into unfathomably melodic noise pop. Fronted by Ivy Nenkov (they/she), the project has expanded beyond a bedroom-confined exercise in exploration to a fully-realized shape-shifting goliath of Philadelphia’s DIY underground. Stand and Wave Born in New York and based in Philadelphia, stand and wave weaves vulnerable, sensitive lyrics between catchy hooks and heavy drops in a smooth blend of emo, punk, and indie rock.
